The Edge
We all want to be competitive in everything we do. And no more so that with punting on horse racing.
Success in punting on horses, in fact most things reduces down to an information war - the people with the best information make the smart moves.
Books have been and still are the best source of general information, and this applies at least as much in the art of racehorse selection and staking as in any other field.
Author Paul Segar has produced textbooks which cover all aspects of punting. The books alone stand as a complete reference but also provide 'food for thought'. You can develop / improve your own ideas as well as learn some new techniques.
Each book is written in plain English with plenty of practical examples in each chapter. Browse the contents of each book or email for further information, if required.

FOMO
It's interesting how you've been doing something even though you didn't know the technical, psychological or emotional name, and doing it quite successfully, well sort of, for most likely many years.
FOMO stands for Fear Of Missing Out and is one of the classic symptoms for many people, including gamblers and/or investors.
Most people think FOMO applies to social media and other news events but is just as relevant for punters as anywhere else.
You decide to bet on a horse seeing $5 spruiked by the pundits. Can't lose.
You're ready to bet but now it's only $3.50. But hey, you don't want to miss out so you take the $3.50. Win or lose. It's FOMO.

FOMO is like a double-edged sword, well more realistically a blunt pocketknife.
On one side, you are quick to act and quite often that fast action results in a positive result.
You take the $5 seeing the price shorten to $3.50 and it wins. You're a genius.
The other side, you get on too early and the whole thing ends up worse. The horse goes from $5 to $10, presents in a muck lather doing cartwheels behind the barriers and you're hoping its just been juiced.

The flip flip side is when you plan to make a wager and decide against it only to see that prove to be perhaps your best result ever.
The urge then is to take the next available manoeuvre to compensate for the miss. Is that reverse FOMO?
That field of unraced 2yo's with the fave ridden by the top jockey/trainer combo. Perfect FOMO strategy.
One thing that any gambler or investor needs to manage is FOMO.
So you say, Okay. So how do I manage it?
The answer once again is a pineapple.
Half the problem with any problem is figuring out what is the problem. Once you know that, you can work on managing it, fixing it, or just living with it and adjusting to that.
